Strawberry Run
The Strawberry Festival Run/Walk includes a one-mile walk and a 5K race. Both begin at the American Legion parking lot at the intersection of Main and Rose streets. The run precedes the Grand Parade and mirrors the parade route. The course is out-and-back, flat, fast and paved. The course record, an impressive 14:59.3, was set in 1993 by Don Stearns of Bend, Oregon. The women's record unofficially belongs to Shelly Giampapa of Eugene, Oregon, who ran the course in a blistering 17:32.5 back in 1991. The first Strawberry Run, held in 1987, attracted 156 runners in the 5K and 32 in the one mile. The overall winner that year, John Albert of Salem, Oregon, praised the course's fast surface. The female champion, Melissa Wilson, was a state track champion from Salem Academy who enjoyed the crowds and atmosphere of running along a parade route.
